Have you ever had a day
Where phrases sing out
    and want to play

“I expand you contract
Between us there’s a cataract”

You try to concentrate
On the mundane
but the singing nearly drives you insane

“My glass is not half-full or even half-empty
It’s too small a glass for all this bounty”

So you give in and join in the joy
Playing with the words
      like a childhood toy

“Oxymorons contradict their lying truth
And offer instead a bourgeois couth”

So we poets ignore the scheduled day
And with all our words
     juggle and play

“Avoid growing old and against the grain
Salt your life with the fundane”
